We received a mind blowing request by email: if we were interested in designing the Hamdala Pyramid Hotel in Qatar with an ambition level comparable to Sydney Opera House… “Dubai has the Burj al Arab and Paris the Eiffel Tower so Qatar will have the Hamdala Pyramid”.
At first we thought it was fishy, but after a pleasant phone call with Mr. Benson Oke; self-esteem defused our scepticism. Why not?
We were about to book flights. And we contacted Arup, to see if they wanted in. We soon got a reply that they had received several identical emails… sad news: ‘419’ fraud. The catch is that you have to sign in for the “Qatar institute”, for the little sum of 1750 euro you can even become a gold member! Creative deception, beautiful, resourceful, convincing. Perhaps we should invited them to become part of our PQ team…
We now hope that the other dream assignment -to design a residence in Florida- that we got one day earlier is not a scam…

This new 669 bed teaching hospital for Doha Community Hospitals
Foundation NHS Trust comprises a 17-storey tower of ward accommodation, a

facilities.
The design challenge is to develop a major new hospital on a restricted city
centre site next to a conservation area and the Doha National Hospital
‘Cruciform’ building. The design of the new building, while respecting these
parameters provides a prestigious and notable addition to the urban environment to
become a familiar and prominent landmark.
The new Hospital will provide an environment commensurate
with 21st Century hospital standards whilst meeting the client’s functional

My office recieved the same, to good to be true, e-mail from Hamdala Group. After looking a their website (which now seems to be offline), there was no need anymore to check emails, urls or phonenumber similarities, as Hamdala Group uses an inverted and vertically scaled vodaphone logo (actually, they liked that stolen logo so much, that on their website they used it quite inflationary) so that it was quite apparent that this was a scam. These suckers are really good in reading architects dreams, fortunately they are stupid enough to make mistakes, they may roast in hell forever.

We held an emergence meeting as regards to your mail, paying upfront [we requested a large retainer up front] will be done if you meet the requirements.We wrote to some firms before you that told us how busy they were. I wish to inform you about the next step for the project commencement, we have schedule a meeting by 26th of March in Qatar.
After our successful meeting with Qatari planning Authorities and its related development bodies. The have accepted our proposal to bring in an international Architect to handle this project on the condition that the Architect or firm must be registered architect with Architect registration council of Qatar to allow him to practice and seal his work here in Qatar.

Bottom line is, that if we can’t speak to you directly and have a conference call to discuss a $420M project, then it is obviously a scam……you guys are really not that bright are you! I appreciate that you are hijacking the names of real companies and that really is rather naughty. I sent an email back to the Yelwaa group (Bashir!) requesting a sizeable retainer to cover our initial expenses and not surprisingly, it all went rather quiet. Plonkers!

We received a similar spam email this week – also claiming to be a Saudi based company offering us a job in total of 720mill usd. The catch is you have to register (and pay $2200) on the website of the Qatar Architectural Council.

I`ve been contacted yesterday by Saudi arabian investors. Beware of a Fariq Aliq from some Yelwaa group (casually, yelma is a city in nigeria, mmmm). They invited me to design three projects in Qatar, too good to be true. I ran a Whois search and the result is a page made last month in Nigeria, for a supposedly 1933´s founded company, the right hand of the king, etc.
There are several things that didin´t check. Thier website it´s not professional and doesn´t have trustworthy information, just numbers and data. The sum of the contract didn´t sum up, there were 200 million dollars flying around. They refused to send google earth location of the sites in question, etc. They want us to visit that country, but who are you really?
This is obiously a new type of scam, that is evolving apparently, don´t reply their emails, because they will learn from what with write to them and will make it more realistic. Never give away personal information and NEVER give money.
Thank you NL Architects for sharing. This is very new and there are no records of this, it is luck that finding this i can´t stop being interested and start taking serious cautions. I´ll try to paste all that they have written to me by the weekend, to make a compilation of their lies and inform people.

This new 669 bed teaching hospital for Al Rayyan Community Hospitals
Foundation NHS Trust comprises a 17-storey tower of ward accommodation, a podium block containing outpatient facilities, plus operating theaters. In addition,there is a two level basement containing radio diagnostics, radiotherapy and related facilities.
The design challenge is to develop a major new hospital on a restricted city centre site next to a conservation area and the Doha National Hospital ‘Cruciform’ building. The design of the new building, while respecting these parameters provides a prestigious and notable addition to the urban environment to become a familiar and prominent landmark.
The new Hospital will provide an environment commensurate with 21st Century hospital standards whilst meeting the client’s functional requirements and provide an identity to reflect DCLH’s historic prestige and world standards of care and research. Phase 2, a 4-storey block plus basements, will provide new facilities for the foundation Hospital for Women.

Our core business comprises the design of gas chamber facilities and execution facilities for various regimes across the undeveloped world. Our other core business is the design of abattoirs and tropical resorts. We have recently been commissioned by the Libyan Government to combine these together in the form of an ‘end of life’ facility for spring revolution protesters and have a second major commission underway for a similar facility in Florida USA.
We would propose that, in order for us to commence the commission, we would be allowed to have some input into the brief in order to provide a world class end of life facility for Qatar. i invite you to be the first guest in this fine facility once completed. We had a successful meeting with the Kuwait Authorities although we have some serious huddle to a pass regarding meeting there requirements we have successful submitted your profile and still waiting for your letter of intent to them.
Regarding the site plan we were advice to officially hand it over on the meeting .
Subsequent to the outcome of our meeting with the with Kuwait planning Authorities
We now need to commence the next step for the project , we have schedule a meeting by 18th of December 2012 in Kuwait, after our prosperous meeting with Kuwait planning Authorities and its associated development bodies. They have accepted our proposal to bring in an international Architect to handle this project on the condition that the Architect or firm must be registered architect with Kuwait Architect League to allow him to practice and seal his work here in Kuwait.
We tried to let them understand our timeline on this project, by appealing to them to wave this process for you , the authorities refused, saying “This should not be new to your Architect if he is really an experience Architect as you said , for you to practice in any country the architect must be registered with the country’s Architects Registration council or board ask your Architect he should know this , sincerely he should know this.”
They require you register with them in other to obtain Kuwait Architects Certificate of practice. To meet with Kuwait Architect League (KAL) http://www.kal-online.org
The certificate of practice will enable Kuwait Architect League (KAL) approve the Architects Preliminary competence for this design. This is the requirement you must meet to enable us move on.
Your competence of obtaining the Kuwait Certification of practice will be of great accomplishment to our partnership.
More so, It will be our pleasure to meet with you in Kuwait soon. All our board of directors will be in Kuwait by 18th of December 2012 for a meeting with you and the Kuwait planning Authorities.

We tried to let them understand our timeline on this project, by appealing to them to wave this process for you , the authorities refused, saying “This should not be new to your Architect if he is really an experience Architect as you said , for you to practice in any country the architect must be registered with the country’s Architects Registration council or board ask your Architect he should know this , sincerely he should know this.”
They require you register with them in other to obtain Kuwait Architects Certificate of practice. To meet with Kuwait Architect League (KAL) http://www.kal-online.org

One sad thing is that the KAL (Kuwaiti Architects League), the associated companies, the ICC, even our foreign affairs offices in the middle east never gave us a decent answer about possible fraud on this company.

On the 3rd of December we received an email with the subject: Architectural Design of Al Maraqq Group Hotel. Supposedly this was a Saudi Arabian Company called Al Maraqq Group (http://almaraqqgroup.com/)that wanted to invest in Kuwait by designing a 5 star hotel with a budget of 170 million usd. We are attaching the original email.
After searching of their website and information online and being falsely reassured by an acquaintance that the company was legitimate we showed interest in designing the project.
After a long list of email exchange and skype conversation with this person Said Al Farouq Abdul Rami from Al Maraqq Group they accepted our portfolio saying the board members were impressed and they would like to send them our fee proposal. After they accepted our fee proposal they informed us of they wanted to book tickets for us so that we could visit the site and meet the board of directors in Kuwait. The catch was that we had to pay a membership fee of an organization called The Kuwait Architects League (http://kal-online.org/)in order to design in Kuwait. This fee was 3,700 usd for an international architect designing in Kuwait. The strange thing was that they needed the membership paid through western union in the UK to a Donald Campbell.
We were very suspicious after this point so we decided to check with the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) who had informed us immediately within minutes that this was probably a scam. Fortunately we had not fallen victims but we were very close. I am sure others must have, because everything regarding this scam was very convincing. Original email below:

I tried to contact the AARCQ again to waive the fee for us as money cannot be transferred to a foreign account on behalf a government body.
As it says on their website that the AARCQ is a statutory board under the ministry of works and housing, I have taken the liberty to contact the ministry of interior of Qatar to verify the payment procedure. It turned out that there is no such ministry of works and housing or the AARCQ.
I am afraid to inform you that you have been scammed by some filthy individuals who want to fraud honorable clients such as yourself.
Luckily nobody has been harmed financially up to now. As there is also no need to register our company in Qatar according to the ministry of interior, we can go ahead with the project for now. We are looking forward for a successful collaboration.
Please book the tickets for 4 of our staff as well as accommodation. As the flight is longer than 4 hours, international business practice requires business class for the directors (in our case 2 people). As we need to understand the local conditions better, we would suggest to stay for a total of 4 days.
Please let me know what information you need to book the flights.

In 2010 we were notified of something that goes like this:
Typical request; design a Hotel / office complex (two towers); please provide a contract proposal etc, etc.
Your proposal looks good, please fly to x to meet y to close the deal, your flight will be reimbursed upon contract approval.
But first, upon arrival, the contract will be negotiated.
(Serious) negotiation takes place, and after concessions from your side are made, suddenly there is news from ‘upstairs’; it looks like the financial director had already approved your original fee-proposal! Lucky you! We need to celebrate this (on your expenses)!
Restaurant expenses approx. 5.000 USD… You fly back and will never hear from them again.
I can’t believe it either but it happened to some US based architects. The scam involves an entire fake-staff of a ‘developer’
Yes, it is basically a very elaborate ‘restaurant-scam’… originally applied to firms from the manufacturing sector and later transplanted to design firms.

Thanks for the comments. We, a Swedish based firm, have received a similar invitation for a comission, this time from Alnaimi construction, Saudi Arabia, (alnaimiconstruction.com), from someone called al-Karim Issa Al Assaf, mail@alnaimiconstruction.com. The set up is similar: a seemingly serious invitation backed up with draft of Agreement, etc. We responded a few times via e-mail and got almost exactly the same answers as in other scams above:

We had a successful meeting as regards inviting an International Architect for the project.
Subsequent to the outcome of our final meeting with the Saudi Architectural Authorities.
We now need to commence the next step for the project, we have schedule a meeting on
24th of November 2013 in Saudi Arabia, after our prosperous meeting with Saudi planning Authorities and its associated development bodies. They require you register with them in other to obtain Saudi Architects certificate. This is the requirement you must meet to enable us move on. Kindly tell us how possible is for you to meeting their requirements.

The design challenge is to develop a major new hospital on a restricted city
center site next to a conservation area. The design of the new building, while respecting these parameters provides a prestigious and notable addition to the urban environment to become a familiar and prominent landmark.
The new Hospital will provide an environment commensurate with 21st Century hospital standards whilst meeting the client’s functional requirements and provide an identity to reflect historic prestige and world standards of care and research. These fraudsters uses real company names among local companies and use as if it is their company. So all names and information collected are from the information in the Chamber of Commerce.
These guys even make fake government site. How dedicated to deceive architects around the world. But it is easy to catch to know it is fake.

These guys tricks are not great but when architects get into a situation, they will be blinded at the moment. When realized, they are already deceived and lost. Here, we lost around 6800 USD to these scams.
Definitely, there is no way to take money back. However, at least protect other architects who would be naïve enough to wire the fund.
These guys will invent another way to deceive other architects. Please BE AWARE these guys will try to take every penny from you. All they say is a huge lie.
Here is the example of lies they made.
We are very much disappointed by your post and so many of your colleagues giving our board bad names. If you will be lucky enough to contact any of them for information they will inform you that we have not collected money from them sometimes people hack our database and collect money from people.
if you think we are fake and still keep that we will be ready for any legal actions you may take and you will be ready to answer us how we are fake people.

We will be attending a meeting with Bahrain Board, to find out the necessary requirement needed from us in bringing an international Architect on 24th March 2014.

It is also FAKE.
Also, these guys normally working at night. So when you receive email not during the office hours, you may need to suspect if it is real.
I hope these help other architects who are looking for projects around the world not deceived by these filthy scums.

It seems the guys who are saying above (I attached here) are the same scammers who are trying to delete the true information to lure more architects around the world.
Would you be cautious of these when you delete the comments on this blog?

As you all mentioned above, the fact is that these guys made fake websites and fake identities. They are international fraudsters and never retreat until they got all pennies out of your pocket. Every single word is a lie.
HBAA Construction is real company whose business has been set up since 1967 in local community. Full name of the firm is HABIB BIN ALI ALAALI CONSTRUCTION COMPANY B.S.C.C. After talking to the director in the firm, I found they don’t have website and they don’t have such a project called “A Concert Hall”, and mentioned they are already aware of this fraudsters. But somehow they just don’t much care, because it is hard to catch these filthy scums and probably many people called and asked the same question we made.
These fraudsters uses real company names among local companies and use as if it is their company. So all names and information collected are from the information in the Chamber of Commerce.
These guys even make fake government site. How dedicated to deceive architects around the world. But it is easy to catch to know it is fake.

The number is not connecting , kindly inform the agent to inform you if the fund is ready for pickups. And ask the agent what he wants us to tell the number as you are the sender because this is the first time we are faced with this problem.
Just call the agency and get this point clear before contacting us, if they are not ready to release the fund for pick up we will not have any option other than to remove your documents in our database until you finalize with the agent.

These guys tricks are not great but when architects get into a situation, they will be blinded at the moment. When realized, they are already deceived and lost. Here, we lost around 6800 USD to these scams.
Definitely, there is no way to take money back. However, at least protect other architects who would be naïve enough to wire the fund.
These guys will invent another way to deceive other architects. Please BE AWARE these guys will try to take every penny from you. All they say is a huge lie.
Here is the example of lies they made.
We are very much disappointed by your post and so many of your colleagues giving our board bad names. If you will be lucky enough to contact any of them for information they will inform you that we have not collected money from them sometimes people hack our database and collect money from people.
if you think we are fake and still keep that we will be ready for any legal actions you may take and you will be ready to answer us how we are fake people.

We had a successful meeting with our board and the investors’ board team today. We communicated to them all we have exchanged including your letter of intent. We are happy to inform you how ready we are to start project. With this we are one step to the final stage.
We have schedule a date with Architects Regulatory board in Bahrain for a meeting to finalize the issue of bringing an international Architect and for use conclude the requirements and the process we have to follow.
