Loop House New Model

Shapeways just delivered a model of Loop House that we designed with yo2 in 2004. It somehow had always turned out to be fairly difficult to build the angular roof in model. The tension in the geometry was often defying the desired figure.

Partly because we set off with the nutty ambition not to use triangles –triangles in our opinion were way too simple; virtually any shape can be created too easily. Instead we tried irregular quadrilaterals only, non-parallel trapeziums placed under different angles. But modifying one point changed the entire structure immediately… hell!  It took a while before So:ren and Kirsten figured out that using a perfect square as plan with all lines facing the center allowed additional flexibility and a way to control the complexity…

It is still quite astounding that Young Joon found a way to actually build it….

The one model that worked out was sent to our client during the design process. For a long time we didn’t have physical proof of da house in the house. But Master Gen in his seemingly endless ‘spare’ time, prepared a new 3D file; here are some snapshots…
